When: September
where we stayed, where we ate and what we did...
We ended our three week trip in Tulum and what a beautiful place to spend our last ten days. We stayed in two areas, firstly on the beach and secondly in the town and I still can’t pick a favourite! There’s so much to do in such a small area and here’s my recommendations.
Stay - Coco
If you’re looking for a sleek and peaceful beach stay then a beach hut here is perfect for you… We stayed in a shared bathroom cabana, they’re white washed with decretive pillows. The bathrooms are separate from the huts and shared but they were extremely nice, the shell taps! On site is a pizzeria at the front and their own beach club! We didn’t try the restaurant but spent some days at the beach bar, they host beach barbecues which were delicious.
Stay - Howlita
After three nights on the beach we moved to Howlita located in Tulum town. I was recommended this hotel by one of my followers and I’m so grateful. The staff were super friendly, helpful and really made us feel at home! Surrounded by restaurants and bars and with their own pool area it was perfect. You could also rent bikes and cycle 10/15 minutes to the beach.
Eat - Burrito Amor
We ate here the most, whilst staying in the town this place was a 5 minute walk from our hotel. We tried not to over indulge in burritos but we did. We came here for dinner and late breakfasts, of course I loved the egg ones.
Eat - Posada Margherita
When we stayed at Coco this place was super close by and I already knew I wanted to eat here on my first night in Tulum, it didn’t disappoint. I haven’t got a great photo of the meal as the lighting was really dim but we came here for breakfast one morning. Such a relaxing atmosphere and right on the beach!
Eat - El Tabano
I remember being really impressed with this restaurant. We found it on a whim and they always seem to be the best places. The waiter was holding fort on his own whilst what we imagined were his family cooking in the kitchen. The menu was really exciting and the food was so good.
Eat - La Nave
We couldn’t find breakfast foods one day so got the ‘full english’ pizza from this place, really good pizza!
Eat - Antojitos La Chiapaneca
Where the locals eat, delicious authentic tacos! That orange sauce was the spiciest thing to ever touch my lips!
Eat - Campanella Cremerie
For something tasty and refreshing, everyone needs a favourite ice cream spot on holiday!
Eat / Drink - Papaya Playa Project
A hotel with a cool restaurant/beach club! Not pictured is some baja fish tacos, mmm! An awesome place for a mid afternoon bite with a view of the ocean.
Eat - La Riviera Costena
Another delicious taqueria
Eat / Drink - Nomade
We spent the whole day here and started off by sitting in the restaurant on floor cushions and eating the best brunch of the trip. I still think of those beans. We then moved onto the beach and set up camp. Obviously a few hours later after getting a little bit too sunkissed and after seeing a angry crab we ordered more food. Our go to afternoon bite was chips n gauc with baja fish tacos, again the best of the trip! Ah how I long to go back here!
Eat - Hartwood
Did you even go to Tulum if you didn’t eat at Hartwood? This restaurant sure did live up to the hype. I tried food that' i’d never usually order or try and I’m so glad I did. Everything was cooked to perfection.
Eat - Ki’bok Coffee
Our last brunch in Mexico, we didn’t find many good brunches to be fair but this huevos rancheros didn’t disappoint.
Drink - Encanto
We found this trendy bar on our last night and tried a Mezcal board, the bartender talked us all through the different types and weakest to strongest. Of course we got bar food too!
Drink - Pasito Tun Tun
A small bar with a quriky fun garden, we enjoyed a few cocktails here!
Do - Gran Cenote
This one was a more controlled cenote, it’s actually a lot bigger than it seems and is one of the most famous ones in Mexico. It was stunning.
Do - Akumal Beach
We got a bus to a beach not too far from Tulum and snorkelled with sea turtles! I was scared at first but it was actually an amazing experience and I’m so grateful I got to do it.
Do - Ruins of Tulum
A great place for iguana spotting and take your swimsuit as there’s a beach there!
Do - Cenote Calavera
The first cenote we saw, I was amazed but terrified. There were some other travellers there encouraging me to go down but I felt so scared. After standing at the top watching Rakesh swinging on the rope in the water for about 20 minutes I plucked up the courage and went in. Extremely glad I did, the water was so refreshing and guess what… I didn’t see anything too scary down there!
